Why homeowners paint cabinets instead of replacing them

Plenty of Tallahassee kitchens have solid wood cabinet boxes in perfectly good shape behind a dated honey-oak or builder-brown finish. Refinishing keeps the layout and the boxes and changes the thing you actually notice: color and sheen. It is also far less disruptive than a tear-out — no demolition, no counters coming off, no weeks without a kitchen.

Cabinets that are sagging, water-damaged, delaminating on particleboard faces, or simply in the wrong layout are usually better candidates for replacement. A painter who looks at them in person can tell you honestly which situation you have.

How cabinet refinishing typically works

  • Doors, drawer fronts and hardware are labeled and removed
  • Everything is degreased — kitchen grease is the number one cause of adhesion failure
  • Surfaces are sanded or de-glossed so the primer can bite
  • A bonding primer goes on, often tinted toward the final color
  • Doors and fronts are sprayed for a smooth finish, boxes sprayed or brushed in place
  • Multiple thin coats with cure time between them, then reassembly and hardware

Cure time is the part people underestimate. Paint can feel dry in hours but continues hardening for days. Loading heavy dishes back into freshly painted cabinets too early is how finishes get marked.

Color and finish choices that hold up

Two-tone kitchens remain popular here: white or off-white uppers with a deeper navy, green or charcoal base. All-white keeps a kitchen bright in rooms with limited natural light. Satin and semi-gloss finishes wipe down more easily than matte, which matters around the sink, range and trash pull-out.

New hardware and hinges are a small add-on that makes painted cabinets look intentional rather than recycled. Mention it in your request if you want it quoted.

What to send with your cabinet request

Approximate number of doors and drawers, the current finish (stained wood, painted, laminate or thermofoil), whether the boxes are solid wood or particleboard, and whether you want interiors painted. Photos help enormously — if you have them, describe the condition clearly, including any peeling near the sink or heat damage beside the range.
